Founded in 1989, Pandemonium has been a Cambridge institution for almost
two decades. Since opening, Boston's premier source of science fiction,
fantasy, and supernatural has attracted a wide and eclectic mix of
customers. Beyond books, the store also offers a wide range of miniatures,
board games, RPGs, and collectible card games.
In 2006, Pandemonium moved from Harvard Square to its current location in
Central Square, greatly expanding its retail area in the process. The
store's grand re-opening saw the introduction of a dedicated events space,
an addition that proved an almost immediate success. Today, Pandemonium
offers a schedule of events as diverse as its customer base.
The latest store happenings, served up fresh from the Pandemonium LiveJournal!
Slightly off-topic 11/17/2008 08:19 AM
dirktiede is an artist who draws the werewolf comic Paradigm Shift (and recently moved here from Chicago.) He just posted about how some of his artwork will be appearing as background in a comic book shop in tonight's episode of Heros.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog about science fiction and fantasy books and games.

Pandemonium's New Buy Policy For Used Stuff! 11/14/2008 02:53 PM
We just updated our Used Stuff policy. The complete policy is behind the cut, but the changes can be summed up quickly:
- We are now also in the market for used SF/Fantasy/Horror DVDs (in addition to books, RPGs, video games, manga and Magic: the Gathering singles). So bring 'em in.
- We offer money for books & games (but not manga or DVDs). We will always offer more in store credit.
- We now have buyers for different types of goods. If the buyer isn't present, we might not be able to take in the used items.
- Magic: The Gathering singles: Christopher (2pm-10pm Mon-Fri, and at any in-store Magic event).
- Manga: Lila (6pm-10pm Mondays and noon-6pm Saturdays)
- Books & RPGs: Tyler (noon-6pm Sunday-Friday)
Selling Used Stuff to Us
Pandemonium buys and sells used paperback books, roleplaying games, DVDs video games, D&D single minis and Magic: The Gathering single cards. If you are interested in bringing some of your stuff in to sell, please follow these steps.
- First of all, we mostly deal in store credit. We simply put the store credit on your member account and you can use it on anything in the store, anytime you want.
- We will pay cash for used video games, Magic singles, paperbacks and roleplaying games, but only for half as much as we would give in store credit.
- PLEASE call ahead to make an appointment with our buyers:
- Magic: The Gathering singles: Christopher (2pm-11pm Mon-Fri, and at any in-store Magic event).
- Manga: Lila (6pm-10pm Mondays and noon-6pm Saturdays)
- Books & RPGs: Tyler (noon-6pm Sunday-Friday)
- Lastly, please read the 'What We Won't Take' section at the bottom of this section, before hauling anything over to the store. Much effort will be saved, on both sides of the counter! The buyer's decision concerning the value of your items is final.
What We Will Pay For Used Stuff - Magic: The Gathering singles: Talk to Chris, as the singles market changes daily. We are always buying, and will give you the best deal in Boston, either in store
- D&D minis: We pay anywhere from $0.50 (for commons) to $3.00 (rares) in store credit. The stat cards need to be included.
- Video games: We start at $1 in store credit or $0.50 cash and scale up to $30, depending on the market. All used games must be in saleable condition. "Saleable" means the games must be unscratched, playable and preferably in their original case. We take the following platforms:
- Nintendo Gamecube
- Nintendo Wii
- Playstation 2 or 3
- Xbox and XBox 360
- Nintendo DS, PSP, & Gameboy Advance
- Books: We generally pay $1.00 in store credit (or $0.50 cash)/book for most paperbacks, but could pay more for the rare stuff
- RPGs: We will generally pay 20% of the original cover price in store credit (or 10% in cash, but will pay more for the rare stuff.
What We Will Not Take
Video Games
- We will not take a game if we already have any copies already on hand.
- We will not take any games from unsupported platforms such as N-Gage, sports games, or the Burger King games.
- We won't take video games that were included with the purchase of your console
Books - We are only interested in fantastic literature. We will not buy: Jean Auel novels, psychological thrillers about serial killers, nonfiction books about UFOs sightings or New Age stuff, etc.
- We will not accept books that are dirty, stained, damaged or incomplete. Condition should be "very good": obviously used is acceptable, but with no tears or major scuffs or creases. The spine can be cracked once or twice but must be totally legible from three feet away.
- We will not accept any library books, hardcovers, or trade paperback editions of titles that are currently available in mass market editions.
- We might not take a book if we already have one or more copies already on our shelves.
- We cannot take any Tie-in titles (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.) or Gaming Fiction (D&D, Warhammer) novels at this time.
DVDs- Like with books, we will only purchase DVDs that are solidly within the science fiction or fantasy genres.
- DVDs games must be unscratched, playable and preferably in their original case
Games - We do not take card games, board games, or box set games.
- We will not take core rulebooks that have been rendered obsolete by later editions. For example, we may accept D&D 2nd edition, because many people still play that edition, but we would not take Shadowrun 2nd Edition core rules.
- Gaming supplements from older editions that are "mechanics light" may be accepted. We may accept a Shadowrun 2nd Ed. Module (or other older module), because an enterprising GM could simply update the situations/characters to the current edition. Ultimately, it boils down to replay value. If we think people will buy it from us, we'll buy it from you.
