About Magic 2010: Called M10 for short, Magic 2010 is a core set expansion with a brand new approach to the game as a whole. M10 will be the first expansion to contain new content, as 1/2 of the printed cards are brand new to the game, including a new set of allied colored multi lands. M10 introduces a small number of major rules changes, especially to combat, a quick cleanup of a few complicated rules, and a few changes to names of zones. You can, and should read about the changes on magicthegathering.com here. These changes will go into effect for these prerelease events and all events going forward.
About Sealed Deck: Sealed deck is a format where instead of bringing a deck to an event, you receive 6 boosters from M10 to build a deck from this limited card pool. Players will have 40 minutes to put together a 40 card deck from the packs they receive. Basic lands are provided but must be returned at the end of the event. For each round, there will be 5 rounds where players play best 2 out of 3 games with the deck against other players. Top placing players will receive additional prize booster packs from M10 as a reward. Players keep playing until the end of the tournament or until they drop out from the tournament. Players are encouraged to play games casually with their deck as well with players in open dueling or other players with sealed or drafted decks.
About Booster Drafts: Each player in a draft receives 3 packs of M10 to draft a deck from. Drafting is a process where you pick cards one at a time matching strategies and colors to cards you have already drafted, building your deck as you go. Once the drafting part is finished, you build a 40 card deck from this limited card pool in 25 minutes. Basic lands are provided but must be returned at the end of the event. Draft pods have 8 players, and you'll play a 3 round tournament with your drafted deck. Each round is 50 minutes long and is best 2 out of 3 games. Top placing players win store credit, $25 to first and $15 to second, or $20 each player if the top 2 players split. Drafts will be run single elimination, however if you have a loss, you can still play casually against other draft players, sealed deck players, or players in open dueling.
About Open Dueling: Players in open dueling receive a random intro pack from M10 which contains a 40 card deck, a foil rare, and a booster pack. Players may modify the deck with cards from the booster pack. Intro packs also contain a rules insert, deck lists for all 5 intro packs, and simple strategy tips to help players who have never played before get started with Magic: the Gathering. With the intro pack in hand, all you have to do is play 5 games with other players who are at the prerelease, either with sealed decks, draft decks, other intro pack decks, or even against constructed decks. Keep track of who you play against on a provided card, turn it in and players will receive a free bonus pack of M10 for coming out to the prerelease. August 2009 06/16/2009 09:11 PM
